Kildare Wildlife Rescue: Supporting injured Irish wildlife

Mooney Goes Wild contributor Terry Flanagan shares his latest round up of nature news.

What would you do if you came across an injured bird or were unlucky enough to hit a fox as it crosses the road at night? Some suggest ringing the local vet, but you may only get an answer machine.

Well, help is at hand. Kildare Wildlife Rescue are a volunteer-run charity organisation dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and return of injured, sick and orphaned wildlife in Kildare and beyond. With a dedicated team of over 100 volunteers their aim is always to return animals in their care to the wild.

Our wildlife is under increasing pressure due to a variety of human-related threats, including vehicle collisions, pollution, and the ongoing destruction of natural habitats. The dedicated, trained volunteers respond to sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife, providing vital care.

Their work plays a crucial role in conserving Ireland's ecosystems and addressing the biodiversity crisis, helping to protect and preserve our natural heritage for future generations.

I paid a visit to the centre recently and met with manager, Dan Donoher who took me on a tour of the site. Although it is a quiet time of year there were still a small number of a variety of animals ranging from budgies to buzzards.

I was interested in foxes. Dan told me that they have had 144 sick or injured foxes at the centre in 2024. With a success rate of over 50% and only four foxes still left, there was a contentment among the staff on a lot of good work completed this year.
